Food labeling – Legal Context

Food labeling varies from country to country. In the EU, food and beverage products must be labeled in a permanent, easily readable and understandable manner, clearly visible and not misleading, as regulated by law. The label must include the name of the food, the expiration date, quantity information, and all necessary warnings.

These warnings mainly concern allergen information and specific warnings about certain ingredients or preparation methods. For example, food and beverage products containing more than 150 mg/l of caffeine must carry the warning “Not suitable for children, pregnant women, and those sensitive to caffeine.” Similarly, raw milk must carry the warning: “This milk has not been heat-treated and may therefore contain harmful organisms.”

If a food product contains two or more ingredients, the ingredients must be listed on the product label with the main ingredient first, followed by the other ingredients in descending order of weight. Common allergens should be highlighted as part of the list.
